The Flames thrilled a packed Schilling Center in their second home event of the season, winning nine out of 10 weight classes en route to a resounding 47-3 victory over King College on Tuesday afternoon.

Liberty’s fourth-consecutive dual meet victory pushes the Flames’ season record to 12-6 on the year. The loss drops King College, a NAIA program out of Bristol, Tenn., that featured three NAIA national qualifiers (Johnson, Puriefory and Rissler), falls to 3-8 on the season.

On the afternoon, Liberty recorded five wins by fall and two by major decision. Christian Smith started the match, getting a second period fall (4:35) over P.J. Puriefory at 125 pounds. Sam Walters opened up a close match with eight points in the final two minutes to record a 12-3 major decision win over Kwinten Brown at 133 pounds.

Tim Harner picked up his team-leading 30th victory of the year with a 10-2 major decision victory over Shad Rissler at 141 pounds, followed by Aaron Kelley’s win by fall (4:05) over Marty Erickson at 149 pounds.

Shaun Smith kept things going for the Flames with a 9-4 decision win over David Johnson at 157 pounds, while Chad Porter’s first-period pin of Josh Hardin (1:43) at 165 pounds, his team leading 10th of the year, gave the Flames a 29-0 lead.

Derek Harrison used some early scoring to hold off a charging Jonathan Campbell late in the match with the 6-4 decision giving King College its first and only points of the meet at 174 pounds.

However, Chris Daggett and Rory Bosek closed out the dual meet with two pins to seal the Flames’ fourth home dual victory of the year. Daggett, at 184 pounds, picked up Liberty’s second first-period win of the afternoon over Josh Goodson (2:17).

Bosek followed as the 197-pounder almost pinned Joey Kenney in the second and finally got him in the opening minutes of the third (5:13) to add to Liberty’s advantage. King College was unable to field a competitor at heavyweight, allowing Patrick Walker to pick up the forfeit victory.

The Flames take to the road this weekend for the Eastern Regional Duals hosted by Delaware State on Saturday. Liberty is slated to square off against Duquesne, Gardner-Webb and Millersville at the all-day event.
