That sounds impressive. Can I get some context oh how impressive this is?

#538547 Considering the level of competition and the number of wins we earned, this is likely the best showing LU has ever had at a tournament (and that includes going to nationals twice and finishing 20th and 14th in the country in 2014 & 2015). We've beaten Ivy Leagues before (UPenn a few times), but this was LU's first win over Princeton, which was likely our best win in the history of the program.

Way to go! I appreciate the context.

To piggyback on this, how many teams/schools are at a competition? Who had the most wins and what was their total? I have no real idea how Quiz Bowl works, so some context could be helpful. Thanks and congrats!

#538586 Adam, there were 24 teams at the tournament, and I believe UPenn won the tournament with an undefeated record. We played 5 prelim rounds before lunch, and then 6 playoff rounds after lunch with 3 separate playoff brackets.

Thanks! So, how many wins would that give Penn? Jm

#538596 I think UPenn was 11-0, but many of these top-tier teams play graduate students. LU's varsity team is 3 seniors and a junior, and all but one are Honors Program students, including 2 National Merit Finalists on a full academic ride.

I am a bit late to the dance floor but I must chime in that this is impressive. Do they stream events like this? I like to make or local HS televised versions my Jeopardy ... thinking this might be a bit more fun.

#539156 Thanks for asking. The Big South used to stream their Quiz Bowl tournament, but they haven't done it in a number of years. However, if you want to watch a half of LU's Quiz Bowl team playing Longwood a few years ago, here is a link to it (but we have much nicer polos now): https://www.facebook.com/LibertyUnivers ... 253851673/

Three of these players took us to nationals two years in a row in 2014 & 2015, where we finished 20th and 14th in the country. The missing player on this team, Doug Stephens, graduated from LU in 2015 and is now at Harvard Law School.

Is the (C) the novice team? Is much trash talked over beating varsity?

#545421 I would imagine there is some contempt held towards from the "academic" institutions. Is that the reality or are you and the team respected out there?
User avatar

#545427 LU has won so many games against the top-tier academic schools that our teams are very much respected. I'm FB friends with many of the coaches.
My favorite part is when we can beat state schools on evolution questions, which just happened again yesterday! :fineprint

#545755 Cider, do you think LU's teams will ever get to the point where they are putting up a decent fight against some of the best A teams in the nation (Top 25) because if I recall, that level of quizbowl is an entirely different monster altogether. I hope one day the Flames can bring home that national title.

#545763 In the past 4 years, we finished in the top 20 nationally TWICE: we were ranked 20th in 2014 and ranked 14th in 2015 (that year we beat Ohio State and Michigan) . This year, we finished ranked 51st nationally (upper third), but were 3rd in our region, only losing to Virginia Tech and NC State; our best win was over Princeton.

The Big South tournament is next Saturday in High Point, where we are 10-time champions.

#545770 Division I is for players who have been to nationals before; Division II is for players who haven't been to nationals. The key is to take only seniors to nationals, so you can play Division II until they graduate. Many of the Division I players are also graduate students.

#545772 DII is what undergraduate teams are that have no players who have gone to nationals.

Purple, isn't NAIA what you played at Judson, or was it NCCAA? Play Basketball
