November 11, 2006
Charlottesville, Va.
» Box Score

The Flames fell twice on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Gym as they dropped a 27-15 decision to George Mason to start the day before falling 31-9 to host Virginia in a tri match.

The event was originally scheduled as a quad match, but Delaware State pulled out on Saturday morning, giving all three teams a forfeit victory, leaving Liberty’s season-to-date record at 4-4 in their first year of wrestling since the 1994 season.

Against the Patriots to open the day, Joe Coughlin picked up a 9-4 decision over Sean Katz at 125 pounds, followed by a 3-1 decision in favor of William Powars over Zachary McCray, giving George Mason an early 6-0 lead.

The two teams split the next two weight classes as Tim Harner got the Flames on the scoreboard with a 9-4 decision over David Emison at 141 pounds, but Christopher Cartella pushed the lead back to six points, 9-3, with a 4-2 win over Aaron Kelley at 149 pounds.

The Flames took control of the match in the next two weight classes as Shaun Smith picked up a 3-2 decision over Robert Henry at 157 pounds, followed by a first-round pin by Chad Porter over Daniel Cook at 2:58 at 165 pounds, giving Liberty a 12-9 advantage.
However, George Mason got three-straight first-round pins to recapture the lead and hold on for the victory. Randy Oates pinned Kyle Walters at 2:47 at 174 pounds, Matt Moyer pinned Jonathan Campbell at 1:39 at 184 pounds and Harry Zander pinned Rory Bosek at 2:40 at 197 pounds.

Patrick Walker closed out the match with a 10-4 decision over Ryan Kittrick at heavy weight, giving Liberty’s its final points of the match.

Against Virginia, the Cavaliers used decisions in the first six weight classes and a pair of first-round pins late in the match to secure the 31-9 victory.

Ross Gitomer opened with an 8-6 decision over Daniel Early at 125 pounds, followed by a major decision, 17-3, by Eric Albright over McCray at 133 pounds.

Liberty stayed close to Virginia in the next two weight classes as Kellon Balum edged out Harner for a 5-4 decision at 141 pounds, followed by a low-scoring 2-0 win by Drew DiPasquale over Kelley at 149 pounds.

Mike Sewell kept things going for the Cavaliers with an 8-2 decision over Smith at 157 pounds and Damian Johnson followed with a 10-4 victory over Porter at 165 pounds, giving Virginia at 19-0 lead in the match.

The Flames got on the scoreboard at 174 pounds as Walter gained a forfeit victory in the weight division, but the Cavaliers closed the door on Liberty as Rocco Caponi got a pin at 59 seconds over Campbell at 184 pounds and Kyle Narkiewicz pinned Bosek at 2:38 at 197 pounds.

The lone victory for the Flames came at heavy weight as Walker pushed his personal record to 7-1 on the year as he picked up a 3-1 decision over Virginia’s Scott Smith.
The Flames will take the next several days off as they don’t return to the mats until next Saturday when they travel to Annapolis, Md., for the Naval Academy Invitational. Liberty’s first open tournament of the year begins at 9 a.m.
