Our other 19 sports havent created a brand that couldnt be changed on a national level. Its a legitimate guess that less than 5% of the US sports following population knows we are the flames currently. I am not sure its something the current Administrations would consider, so this could be pointless.

Maybe its a personal dilemma, I just find it hard to "rally" as the FLAMES. Its cheesey. Knowledge AFLAME ? so we are the flames , with an eagle mascot? We also blow fire out of the top of the FOC for touchdowns. Add to that the flock of eagles conspiracy, its mass confusion.

For now however; GO FLAMES!

I guarantee it's way less than that. Whenever I'm asked where I went to college, it's rare that people have even heard of Liberty down here.

Team names are generally cheesy to a point. WINNING eliminates most of the cheese to cool ratio discrepancy. Furthermore, there does not NEED to be any relationship between a teams nickname & its mascot. Just look at the team with 14 national championships under its belt. Roll Tide!

The Beavers are named after Oregon's nickname, the Beaver State (Tar Heels, Buckeyes, etc.). FAU's nickname is now the Owls not the Blue Wave (unless there's another Blue Wave).

For the record, I'd be fine with going with the Eagles as the new nickname. Sure, it's far from original, but it fits with the name and the mascot is already in place. I know a change will likely never be considered, but it should.

The problem is we're making the word "Flame" be in there. Anything we do with that word will instantly be taken in a homosexual context.

I was playing golf with a buddy of mine yesterday and he mentioned that he couldn't wait for college football to start. I told him that the Flames were playing Wake Forest this year. He said, "The Flames?! Let me get this straight, a Christian school named its mascot after the flames of hell?!" I told him that Liberty's mascot was actually an eagle and he said, "So the mascot is a gay eagle?" I thought the whole thing was funny.

I can only speak from experience here in Virginia and North Carolina, but it seems every Christian school (denominations aside) are either the Eagles or the Crusaders. That's kind of why I like the Flames, even though I hear the same things adam does.

When people say to me "why is a Christian school the flames?", it gives me an opportunity to talk about Liberty to those who wouldn't normally care about it.
