Junior Right-Side Hitter Mary Alice Pike
Each Wednesday throughout the volleyball season, fans will get the opportunity to know one of the Liberty volleyball players a bit better through a question-and-answer session. Today, the series continues with junior right-side hitter Mary Alice Pike, who won the Big South Player of the Week award last week and has posted double-digit kills in eight-consecutive matches.
What is your favorite Bible verse and why?
Romans 15:13 is one of my favorites because it is so encouraging and leaves you with nothing but hope.
What is your favorite movie?
One of my favorite movies that I absolutely love and could watch for hours is A League of Their Own.
What is your favorite memory while competing in your sport?
Winning the state championship was a really neat experience.
What is your most embarrassing memory while competing in your sport?
I was pretty embarrassed when I tripped over my own feet in warm-ups before a game and fell flat on my face.
I came to Liberty because…
I love the competitive atmosphere in the athletics and having teammates that all love the Lord is amazing.
Share something that people don’t know about you.
I have a huge obsession with the show Home Improvement. I own the first four seasons on DVD.
What has been your defining moment as an athlete?
I am from Durham, N.C. and I grew up around Duke. When I was a freshman in high school I had the opportunity to meet with the women’s basketball coach and take a tour of all the facilities that were there. After seeing all they had to offer I decided that I wanted to be a part of college athletics somewhere. It was really inspiring.
What is one question you would ask Dr. Falwell?
Can we do something about parking?
If you could be somebody else for a day, who would you be and why?
I would like to be Mike Rowe from “Dirty Jobs” for a day. His job is amazing. Travel around and learn how to do all kinds of dirty jobs. Adam or Jamie from “Mythbusters” would be interesting as well.
Who is your favorite Liberty athlete?
Jessica Joy Nelson.
What is the best advice you have ever been given?
Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.
If you could change one rule in your sport, what would it be and why?
I don’t think I would really change anything. I think the sport is pretty fun and fair as it is.

Do you have any pre-game rituals?
I always have to eat something before we start play. I don’t play well on an empty stomach.
Who is one person in history that you would like to meet and why?
I would love to meet Lucille Ball. I think she is so hilarious.
A place I’ve always wanted to visit, but never had the chance is (and why)?
I have always wanted to travel to Italy because it is so beautiful in pictures. There is so much history and amazing food.
