A good win for the soccer team. Coastal Carolina is a pretty good team although not the power they were a few seasons ago. Hopefully this win can carry us to better things in the near future.

Good win for LU...Now it's on to a big matchup on Saturday between Winthrop and Liberty...Both teams have very high hopes for the season and both have played pretty well so far.

Here is the SID's take on the game:
Roberts and Lewis Net Goals as Flames Down Chanticleers, 2-1

Lynchburg, Va.

Toby Lewis had a goal and an assist in 2-1 win Tuesday.

Toby Lewis and Darryl Roberts each scored goals as the Liberty Flames defense clamped down on the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers for a 2-1 victory, Tuesday afternoon in a Big South Conference match at Liberty Soccer Field.

With the win, Liberty moves to 2-1 in conference play and 3-2 overall, while Coastal Carolina drops its first conference match of the season and falls to 4-3-2 overall. The victory was the Flames first against that Chanticleers since a 2-0 win at Coastal Carolina in 2001.

Getting out to a quick start, Liberty pressured the Coastal Carolina net early. In the first 10 minutes of play, the Flames got off five shots and forced the Chanticleer netminder Jeremy Wolfgang to make three saves in the time span without a return shot by Coastal Carolina.

In the 19th minute, the Flames’ pressure paid off as Liberty staked itself to a 1-0 lead. Lewis (Jr., MF, Morrison, Colo.) found Liberty’s all-time leading scorer Roberts (R-Sr., F, Trincity, Trinidad) with a through pass into the box. The forward collected it in front of the net and beat the keeper one-on-one with a shot to the right corner for his fourth goal of the season.

Still controlling play, Liberty extended its lead to 2-0 less than nine minutes later. This time, Lewis won a scramble for a broken-up pass and rifled a shot into upper part of the goal for his second tally of the year.

In the half, the Flames out shot the Chanticleers, 10-2, and took their 2-0 lead to intermission.

After the break, Coastal Carolina cut the Liberty advantage to 2-1. Luke Ibbetson scooped up a clearing pass and split two defenders to score his ninth goal of the season, closing the gap.

The Flames defense then rose to the occasion to deny the Chanticleers on several opportunities. On a free kick in the 76th minute, the Liberty wall blocked shots by Ibbetson and Mkheli Dube. Later, Flames keeper Kevin Mahan (Sr., Waterford, Mich.) stopped a shot from the right wing by forward Tim Shaw to preserve the Liberty lead.

On the afternoon, the Flames held a 17-12 shot advantage over the Chanticleers and also held the edge in corner kicks, 4-2.

Liberty’s Mahan made two saves in the contest, while Jeremy Wolfgang and Adam Weant split time in the Coastal Carolina net with Wolfgang having three saves in the first half and Weant making two in the second.

The Flames finish a three-game Big South swing by traveling to Rock Hill, S.C. Saturday for a conference match with Winthrop. Match time is set for 5 p.m. Coastal Carolina meanwhile will travel to Greensboro, N.C. to square off against UNC Greensboro Saturday.
