Right now we trail 1-0 at the 67 minute mark. Looking to win this one. It seems like the mens soccer team has been mired in mediocrity for a long time now. Time to change that trend.

Highlanders Down Flames, 3-1
September 5, 2006
Radford, Va.

After an evenly played first half, the Radford Highlanders scored three second-half goals to defeat the Liberty Flames, 3-1, Tuesday evening in a Big South Conference contest at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium.

With its first setback of the season, Liberty moves to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the Big South Conference, while Radford improves to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference. The match was the first in conference play for both teams. The setback snapped a six-game win streak by the Flames over the Highlanders, dating back to 2000.

Both teams had chances in the first half, but neither side could convert their chances despite eight shots by Radford and seven from the Flames. The game went to intermission in a scoreless tie.

Radford senior Ramon “Kike” Negron, who came up empty on an open look at the net in the first half, redeemed himself after shortly after halftime. Negron corralled a loose ball in front of the Liberty goal and flicked it past Flames’ keeper Kevin Mahan (Sr., Waterford, Minn.) to give Radford a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute of play.

Senior Jonathan Smith gave Radford a 2-0 edge; 25 minutes later, when he took a touch pass from Negron and scored from 18 yards out.

Highlander junior Davorin Husadzinovic added an insurance goal in the 86th minute, recording the marker on a penalty kick after being taken down in the box.

Husadzinovic’s goal became paramount just two minutes later when junior Toby Lewis (Morrison, Colo.) fired a hard shot from the right side of the box and scored off a pass from senior forward Darryl Roberts (Trincity, Trinidad) at 88:31. The marker, Lewis’ first of the season, made the final outcome, 3-1.

Radford sophomore keeper Zach Roszel and Mahan each made two saves on the evening.
The Highlanders held a slight 15-13 advantage in shots, while the Flames had 10 corner kicks to Radford’s six advantage. The teams combined for 40 fouls in the physical game.

The Flames return home for their first home match of the season as they host the #1 ranked North Carolina Tar Heels, Saturday afternoon, at Liberty Soccer Field. Match time is set for 2 p.m.

I knew a guy who played on the soccer team (a very good player) and ran into him after graduation a couple years later, and as we were discussing the team's dive that year in the post season, he mentioned that the team, for some reason always had great talent, enough to go far into the post, post season, but that they always seemed to play down to their competition and lose games they should have won. Now, I'm not sure of Radford's stregth this year, but LU's team seems to be loaded with good talent...hopefully, the can make the necessary adjustments from this result and rebound quickly with some W's. Best Wishes to the Team.

I always thought the same thing too. It seem like for the last 3 years we are supposed to have that "breakout year" but it never happens for some reason and we get stuck in mediocrity. Ever since Alder has been the coach that has happened. That wasn't the case with Bill Bell. I guess it is too early in the year to start coach bashing, just wanted to bring up an important point and observation. We will see what they do vs UNC.

The first 2 games this year show a continuing trend of the last few years.
