The Liberty Lady Flames scored a goal in each half and used a solid defensive effort to down the John Brown Golden Eagles, 2-0, Friday afternoon at the JBU Soccer Field.

With the win, Liberty moves to 2-1 on the season, while John Brown falls to 0-2.

Controlling play throughout most of the contest, the Lady Flames broke through for their first goal of the contest off a corner kick at 19:15. Maggie Woody (Fr., MF, Asheville, N.C.) sent the corner across the Golden Eagles’ goal mouth, which Paige Cheek (Sr., D, Gambrills, Md.) headed down in the box. Tanya Payne (Jr., D, Prescott, Ariz.) pounced on the ball and put it home from 5 yards out for her first goal of the season and a 1-0 advantage.

Liberty added to its lead in the second half as Brittney Bench (Jr., F, Orefield, Pa.) dribbled past a John Brown defender into an open space in the middle of the field and blasted a shot from 25 yards out for her first goal of the season and the 2-0 final margin of victory.

On the afternoon, the Lady Flames out shot the Golden Eagles, 11 to 4, while also holding the advantage in corner kicks, 6-2.

Katherine Neff (Sr., Guelph, Ontario) started in net for the Lady Flames and played the first half, making three saves, while Michelle Rich (Fr., Friendswood, Texas) played the second half and made one save. Golden Eagles’ keeper Natalie Wall made seven saves.

Liberty continues on its Arkansas road trip with a visit to Fayetteville, Ark. on Sunday to square off with the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks. Match time is schedule for 1 p.m.
