It is a final and we lost 1-0. Not bad considering how good UVA and the ACC is in womens soccer. That is the best that we have done agains't them.

I don't really believe in good losses but I guess you could say it about this one. Hopefully the guys can keep it close when they play them later in the season.

Considering when they usually play the ACC schools, you are looking at scores ranging from 5 to 8 to nil, this is an excellent loss.

Despite a strong effort by Liberty , the #7 Virginia Cavaliers used a first half goal to edge the Lady Flames, 1-0, Sunday evening at Klochner Stadium.

With the setback, Liberty drops to 1-1 on the young season, while nationally-ranked Virginia moves to 2-0.

The Lady Flames held off several early attacks by the Cavaliers in the first 15 minutes of the contest as Liberty goalkeeper Katherine Neff (Sr., Guelph , Ont.) made two saves and another shot sailed high.

Later in the half after a Liberty foul, the Cavaliers scored the lone goal of the match as midfielder Jen Redmond tucked a 19-yard free kick into the net at the 19:31.

The Lady Flames later in the period got a scoring chance on a counter attack as a shot by freshman midfielder Maggie Woody ( Asheville, N.C. ) went high.

With Virginia up 1-0 at intermission, neither team could put the ball past either goalkeeper in the match’s second half.

Liberty freshman Michelle Rich (Fr., Friendswood, Tex. ), who took over the keeper duties at halftime, made five saves in the Lady Flame net.

Meanwhile, a Liberty chance went wide by Ashley Braam (Sr., F, Grand Rapids, Mich. ) off a corner kick 15 minutes into the second half.

For the match, the Cavaliers out-shot the Lady Flames, 17-2, while holding the edge in corners, 9-2.

Liberty goalkeeper Neff made two saves in the Lady Flames’ net in the first half, while Rich came on in the second half to make five saves. Virginia netminder Christina deVries did not make any saves in the contest.

The Lady Flames next travel to Siloam Springs, Ark. for a contest against the John Brown Golden Eagles. Match time is schedule for 4 p.m.
