The Liberty Lady Flames netted two goals within five minutes of each other in the first half and later added another in a 3-0 shutout of the Longwood Lancers Friday night at the Longwood Athletic Complex in the 2006 season opener for both teams.

With the win, the Lady Flames begin the season 1-0 while dropping the Lancers to 0-1.

Liberty tallied the opening goal at 12:59 when freshman Maggie Woody (M, Asheville, N.C.) drilled a free kick from 25 yards over the head of the host keeper for her first collegiate goal and a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Flames increased their advantage to 2-0 less than five minutes later when senior midfielder Kristin Faxon (Chester, N.H.) also scored unassisted on a rebound put-back to the lower left post off a shot by Kendall Bartholomew (Jr., F, Thaxton, Va.) at 17:22.

Longwood began the second half with more offensive pressure, but could not take advantage before the Flames secured the 3-0 outcome with another goal at 60:50. Junior Ashley Braam (F, Grand Rapids, Mich.) placed a hard shot to the right post off a nice pass into the box from senior Mandee Wheelock (MF, Front Royal, Va.).

Liberty held a 13-6 edge in shots on the night, while Longwood had a 7-5 advantage on corner-kicks. In the Lady Flame net, senior goalkeeper Katherine Neff (Guelph, Ontario) made no saves in the first half as Liberty only allowed the Lancers one shot in the half, while freshman Michelle Rich (Friendswood, Texas) made two saves in the second half. Senior keeper Heather Storrie went the distance in front of the net for the Lancers, making three saves.

The Lady Flames next travel to Charlottesville, Va. on Tuesday night to square off with the Virginia Cavaliers, the nation’s eighth-ranked team. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
