Its a real weird deal. CCU's guys explained it to me (or TRIED TO)

Coastal's team is in a different region than ours- they ended up 4th I believe, and their region sends 8, so they were in.
Our region only sends 4 teams, but at last check we were ranked 4th, so thats how we got in.

I'll have to look it up, but there's a link out there somewhere that explains it better than I can.

Congrats to our guys, by the way!

Congratulations!

The East is typically loaded with talent so they've tried to balance the strong programs between the three regionals.

Look at what Clemson's coach said about it as they have to go to Cleveland.
NCAA sends Tigers to Cleveland
USC, Coastal land in Orlando regional

Clemson’s Larry Penley knew it was probably coming. He even agrees with the idea — in principal.

That said, the Tigers’ golf coach was less than thrilled to be shipped to the NCAA Central Regional, where his 12th-ranked team will be seeded fourth behind Oklahoma State, fellow ACC member Georgia Tech and Texas A&M.

“They (NCAA) finally got it right,” Penley said of this year’s assignments of the nation’s top college golf teams without regard to geography. Nine of the top 18 teams in the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) poll are from the East.

“I hate that we have to go, but I think it’s a good thing,” Penley said. “It looks like they dispersed the top 30, which they should.”

While the Tigers travel to Sand Ridge Golf Club in Cleveland for the May 18-20 regional, South Carolina and Coastal Carolina will stay closer to home. Both were placed in the East Regional at Lake Nona Golf Club in Orlando. The Chanticleers, ranked 18th in the latest GCAA poll, drew a No. 10 seed, while the Gamecocks (32nd by the GCAA) are seeded 13th.

Flames Finish Final Day At NCAA East Regional In 22nd Place
May 20, 2006
Orlando, Fla.

The Flames finished their second-ever appearance at the NCAA East Regional in 22nd place out of 27 teams as the three-day event concluded today at the Lake Nona Golf & Country Club.

Liberty finished the final day with a 16-over par 304, giving the Flames a three-day total of 53-over par 917 (310-303-304) on the par-72, 7,179 yard course.

This marked Liberty second appearance at the NCAA Regional Championship as the Flames earned their first-ever ticket to the event with an at-large bid in 2003.

Wake Forest carded a tournament best five-under par 283 on the final day to climb over several teams to claim the team title at the championship as the Demon Deacons carded a three-day even par 864 (285-296-283), while No. 1 seed Georgia finished just one stroke behind with a one-over par 865 (284-294-287).

Fellow Big South Conference member Coastal Carolina (301-288-288) carded an even par 288 on the final day of competition to finish the three-day event in a tie for fifth place along with Charlotte (299-290-288) as both programs finished the tournament with a 13-over par 877.

UCLA’s Kevin Chappell fired a four-under par 68 total to jump from eighth to individual medalist honors on the final day as he finished atop the leaderboard with a five-under par 211 (70-73-68), while Coastal Carolina’s Dustin Johnson (71-72-69) and UNLV’s Jarred Texter (70-70-72) finished in a tie for second with a four-under par 212.

Peter Horstman (76-77-76) and Albie Powers (78-74-77) led the way for the Flames as both golfers finished tied for 82nd place with a 13-over par 229, while Andrew Turner finished tied for 90th with a 14-over par 230 (75-81-74). Parker McKoy finished 115th with a 18-over par 234 (81-76-77), while Jay Calvo rounded out Liberty’s golfers with a 22-over par 238 (81-76-81) in a tie for 124th place.

congrats to the guys who made the list. To be named to the Presidential Honor Roll, student-athletes must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or better for the recently-completed academic year.

What's the scholarship pie for potential golf student athletes. Are there full or partials available, does the team actively recruit or is it mainly walk-ons? If anyone has any info on this, I would greatly appreciate it.

In general, most golf teams get just a scholarship or two to split up amongst the team members. But every little buit helps.

Just a quick FYI from the State Open over here in Richmond ... Jeff Thomas, LU's golf coach, shot an even-par 72 in the first round and is six behind the leader, Faber Jamerson, who is the head pro up at Poplar Grove. Thomas was in great shape before taking a double bogey on No. 9 (his 18th hole, he started on No. 10).

Yeah, A.G., thanks. It flew by quickly. Year 2 figures to be pretty exciting around campus. Lots of fun things to write about for sure.

I'd tell you what a great job you've done for the past year, Chris. But everytime I do I get accused of kissing up. And that's not visualization that I have any interest in being associated with.

You have experienced the most trying year in LU sports history. Now hopefully you'll get a feel for us at our best.
