They´re the best of an elite group

Sacopee Valley´s Michelle Libby and Foxcroft Academy´s Josh Pelletier were named the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram female and male athletes of the year.

Pelletier, who excelled in football, wrestling and baseball, was chosen from among 14 boys MVPs.

The MVP in wrestling, Pelletier won his third consecutive Class C state championship in the 275-pound division, then added a New England championship. He was an honorable mention All-American after finishing his career with a record of 113-11.

Pelletier is a member of the family for whom the state´s top wrestling award is named.

"It´s a huge honor and I definitely didn´t expect it," Pelletier said of being named the state´s best athlete. "So many great athletes are here."

Pelletier was impressed by the field of candidates, including Libby.

"The numbers were incredible," Pelletier said. "I can´t believe Michelle had an .055 average against her."

Pelletier has accepted an ROTC scholarship to Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va.
