Liberty University head wrestling coach Jesse Castro has announced that former West Virginia wrestler Chris Daggert transferred to Liberty earlier this fall and has been practicing with the team in preparation for the upcoming season.

Daggert, a 184-pound wrestler from Williamstown, W.Va., competed in several open tournaments last season for the Mountaineers.

"Chris is a seasoned wrestler with Division I experience,” stated Castro. “I believe he can be an impact wrestler for our program."

Daggert, who will have three years of eligibility with the Flames’ program, is a graduate of Parkersburg High School where he was a West Virginia state champion and a three-time state place winner.

"Chris has a Division I training mentality,” continued Castro. “It is hard to succeed on this level without a passion to train and Chris has just that."

"I had been contemplating transferring from WVU for some time before I was asked to consider attending Liberty University,” said Daggert. “Before attending, I was unsure about it. But now I have found this transfer to be a blessing! This school and the wrestling program have helped me better myself physically and spiritually."

Daggert and the Flames officially return to the mats on November 5 when Liberty opens up its 2006-07 season at a quad match hosted by Virginia Tech that will include Liberty, Virginia Tech, Anderson and Gardner-Webb in Blacksburg, Va.

Chris Daggett has experienced a total transformation since arriving at Liberty nearly two years ago.

After a night of heavy drinking, 18-year-old Chris Daggett found himself passed out on a friend’s couch in Parkersburg, W.Va. When Daggett woke up, his friend told him he had to leave.

Still intoxicated, he eventually got in his car and drove away. While driving, a sleep deprived Daggett kept dozing off behind the wheel, hitting three mailboxes in the process. Aware of the state he was in, he pulled over at a gas station and fell asleep in his car.
