Putting years of work into a sport that may be one of the least hyped as far as Georgia high schools goes, Alyssa Pegues can now call herself an NCAA Division I athlete. No stranger to traveling miles and miles for the opportunity to out-do everyone around her leaping into a pit of sand, Pegues, a Houston County High School senior, signed a scholarship offer to Liberty University’s track and field program on Monday.
“Every day … every day …,” said Pegues about the rigorous practice schedule she’s been on, not just with her Houston County High spring team, but working with different coaches, including her mother, Elizabeth Frank. “With an occasional weekend off. Constantly competing, going in and out of town.”
For a sport like track and field, an athlete needs more than an impressive high school résumé to impress the college coaches. Pegues is a part of USA Track & Field, and at last summer’s state championships she placed second in the triple jump and fourth in the long jump. She joined this summer league when she was an eighth grader when her main focus was running.
