LIU was very big up front and had some great servers. Chelaine's dad told me they are 2nd in the NCAA in service aces. I think all but 2 of their servers did jump serves. Molly told me one of their ladies is first in the NCAA in aces. Their serving hurt us because we just didn't pass well on serve receive, and as a consequence, couldn't get into our offense. Our blocking was a little suspect also. We seemed to be moving slower than usual. LIU was a very good team, but I believe if we had played more like our usual game, we would have beaten them. They are loaded with seniors and played like it.
Georgetown was a different matter. They are not very good, but we let them stay around and it cost us in game 3. I game 1 they only had 10 kills as a team and still had 28 points. We made too many mistakes and let them almost steal it from us. In game 2 we played much better. Then we let up in game 3 again, and it cost us. Game 4, we got back on track and finished like we should have. I know Coach was not happy with the Gtown performance.
As for Becca, she played very well. She anticipated well and made some really nice defensive plays. She served well also. She was a bright spot in an otherwise mediocre day.
What really got Coach upset with the down ref was that we had a ball that they blocked and we played, but the up ref called it a 4 ball. Coach asked the down ref to let the up ref know they touched it, and he told Coach he said he couldn't override the up ref's call. Later, they hit one in the net that went out and the ref called it out and said it was our point. The Gtown coach told the down ref that we touched it on the block, and he overruled the up ref and said it was their point. The down ref made no move to make the call until Gtown's coach came up to him and made her call. That's when coach got about 3 inches from the down refs nose and told him it was the very same call he said he couldn't override when it happened to us. I didn't think we had touched the ball, so I called out to the ref and told him to give the Gtown coach a white shirt and a whistle. At the end of game 3 a Gtown player came charging up to the net to tip the ball over for the last point and crashed into the net. The down ref was oblivious and didn't call it. It would have tied the game at 31. That was when Coach got in his face again.
Refs in both matches let a lot of ugly ball handling go uncalled on both sides of the net. Unfortunately for us, more of the bad ball handling happened on the other side of the net. If they had called tighter, we would have come out ahead point wise.
