Pre-Nats will be held tomorrow at Indiana State in Terre Haute, IN. LU has been randomly placed in the white race (the other is the blue race). Josh holds the 8k course record.

On a very related note, I heard on the audio interview with Coach Tolsma (http://liberty.edgeboss.net/download/li ... -11-07.mp3) that a decision is very close to being made regarding Sammy Chelanga's status for the year. I thought it had already been decided that he was not eligible this year, but it looks like the NCAA is taking a look at it. He said they were expecting a decision in the next few days. That would really set the guys up for a great season. We shall see!

You guys know you are having the chance to see the best runner in not only Liberty History, but one of the best in the history of college cross country. The guys has never lost an invitational. That's like the basketball team not ever losing a game until the final four - FOUR YEARS IN A ROW.

If you have a chance to see a race - go see him.

according to coach, if sam had been eligible and run we would have been 5th, putting us ahead of stanford and notre dame who are both ranked in the top 15 in the country

So, Dan...what's the story on Sammy's eligibility? Is there a final word that can be passed on?

I have a question, which one of the runners may be able to answer. It seems like every year Josh smokes the competition on this course, yet in the Nationals, on the same course, his times seem much slower. Any ideas as to why?

I can tell you that last year and i believe the year before it rained and the course was wet. That will affect times.

The Nationals course is 10k.

Thanks Lit Crit...that does make sense. A longer race is going to tax the runners more.

I completely disagree. According to "The Sparky's", Josh isn't even the best athlete at LU. Some kid who plays basketball is better.

Liberty senior Josh McDougal saw his 8K course record shattered just minutes before he toed the starting line, Saturday morning at Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind. He then proceeded to reclaim the record with a school and Big South-record time of 22:56.4, winning his third-consecutive Pre-Nationals individual crown. On the women’s side, Lady Flame senior Piper Newby shaved nine seconds off her own 6K school record, at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course.

Thanks 01LUGrad I forgot to look that up. I should have done more research - my bad. Maybe Josh can win a Sparky this year - are they giving them out to teams other than basketball and football?

From the Terre Haute fishwrap:
Great course, perfect weather make for fast times at Pre-Nationals

By Craig Pearson
The Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE — Perfect autumn weather and a dry turf at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course on Saturday equated to course records being the norm during Pre-Nationals races.

The presence of the top runners in the NCAA pushing one another certainly didn’t hurt as an individual meet record was set in all four main races.

Josh McDougal of Liberty took his own 8,000-meter record back after it was briefly taken by Lopez Lomong of Northern Arizona in the day’s first race.

Then the 2006 NCAA runner-up, junior Jenny Barringer of Colorado, followed McDougal’s lead to swipe the record set by Susan Kuijken of the Netherlands.

props to the men on 17th and to the ladies with a very respectable 23rd

Also, CCU represented as well: CCU men were 37th and their ladies 24th.

BSOUTH looking decent on the national scene.

Not to be Johnny Raincloud here, but CCU at 37th place isn't much to write home about. A team consisting of Medic, Super, Smoothie, BJ, and Sly would have placed 4 spots behind them. (There were only 40 teams in the race.) Of course, that is assuming they could all cover the 5 mile course... :medic
